265. How They Won The War.....(9th Ave, NYC)

Personality wise, I easily love this photo. I saw this couple and immediately though of the 50's Middle America (save their surroundings), where dark blue Levi's, slick haircuts and simply printed dresses ruled the day. My only regret was that I didn't have a pack of cigarettes handy to strategically place in the gentleman's sleeve fold.

*- Note to self: Always carry pack of Marlboro's from now on......

261. Woman of Sartorial Excellence: Jacquline Kennedy Onassis

During her husband's presidency, Jacqueline Kennedy became a symbol of fashion for women all over the world. She retained French-born American fashion designer and Kennedy family friend Oleg Cassini in the fall of 1960 to create an original wardrobe for her as First Lady. From 1961 to late 1963, Cassini dressed Mrs. Kennedy in many of her most iconic ensembles, including her Inauguration Day fawn coat and Inaugural gala gown as well as many outfits for her visits to Europe, India and Pakistan. Mrs. Kennedy's clean suits, sleeveless A-line dresses and famous pillbox hats were an overnight success around the world and became known as the "Jackie" look. Although Cassini was her primary designer, Mrs. Kennedy also wore ensembles by French fashion legends such as Chanel, Givenchy, and Dior. More than any other First Lady her style was copied by commercial manufacturers and a large segment of young women.

In the years after the White House, her style changed dramatically. Gone were the modest "campaign wife" clothes. Wide-leg pantsuits, blue jeans, large lapel jackets, silk Hermes head scarves and large, round, dark sunglasses were her new look. She also experimented with different styles, often wearing a large amount of jewelry, hoop earrings with her hair pulled back, and gypsy skirts.

Jackie Kennedy's impact on fashion also had tons to do with the recent booming influence of television (which also helped her husband John snatch the Presidency from Richard Nixon), and thrusted her as first lady into households like no other before or after her. Women everywhere took note, especially those in the American workforce and the way they approached fashion was never the same again. Today style minded first lady, Michelle Obama carries the baton Jacqueline first set off nearly 50 years ago, taking sartorial risks not seen since the Kennedy administration.

256. Man of Sartorial Excellence: Brian Epstein

Brain Epstein nearly doesn't get the credit he deserves for his place in Rock and Roll history. He not only discovered The Beatles, had a role as their manager but he was the mastermind behind the quartet's change in style from leather clad bikers with slicked hair (thanks to stints in Hamburg) who cursed, drank and mingled with the girls onstage, to a more proper stage appearance by bowing in unison and wearing tailored suits, topped off with the "Beatle boot" (a Chelsea boot with a Cuban heel).

Just about any clip you'll see of The Beatles during "Beatlemania", there was Brian, nodding his head along to Ringo's steady beat at the Cavern Club in 1962 or marching behind them as they greeted thousands of adoring fans at Heathrow Airport or rushing the boys away to safety from the screaming fans at Shea stadium. Also in the clips, when you see Brain, you make sense of how and why The Beatles changed their appearance in the first place. Although he was mostly shown in dark suits and ties, he contained this aura about him. Part of it being fine Savile Row tailoring but in his posture, his facial expressions that never gave away too much about him or even when he added an accessory like a neckerchief, he owned the look and "sharply" differentiated himself. If someone else guided them, I highly doubt The Beatles as a unit would not have looked as good.

Paul McCartney has said on more than one occasion that if anyone was deserving of being referred to as the "fifth Beatle", Brian Epstein was your man. Today would have been his 75th birthday.

Fun Facts about Brian Epstein:
- He is the Godfather to John Lennon's first child Julian (who was also the inspiration for 'Hey Jude').

- In 1963, the groups that Brian managed spent 36 weeks at number one on the UK charts.

- He was the alleged subject of two Beatle tunes, "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" and "Baby Your a Rich Man", alluding to Epstein's sexuality.
